What Are Success Factors?
An insight drawn from real-world experience, where the person tells us what works.
Why do they matter?
In human sciences, the term heuristics is used to describe a simple, fast, experience-backed rules of thumb that help experts navigate complex decisions.
The world is getting more and more complex.
Every time an expert says something simple but powerful like:
“Test small before scaling big,”
They’re handing down a heuristic. A eureka moment they’ve already discovered.
By applying this wisdom, you are quickly tapping into thousands of hours and decades of experience.
So It’s About People’s Experience?
Exactly.
Put the textbook down. Instead, look at what you do, what are your success factors?
Then ask other experts what are their hacks/things that they think matter the most.
Write these down. Remember them. Use them.
Success Factors is to study what people actually do, not what a textbook tells us.
This “Sourcebook” explains how we discovered the Success Factors that are core to all projects. It is a quick introduction.
p.s. don’t sweat the term Heuristics, it just means the hacks/mantras that experts carry around with them, we call them Success Factors!

When you put the right
foundations in place…
The things that make or break your idea or project need to be simpler and easier to apply.
Statistics show success rates aren’t where they should be. But it’s the human element we cannot ignore. Many project managers feel under-supported and burn-out for project managers is higher than average. We need to get better at making ” being “highly successful” repeatable.
Why do they matter?
Seventy years of professionalizing project management have moved success rates only marginally. Depending on the study, project success still sits between 0.5 percent and 35 percent.

These examples use success factors drawn from analysis of interviews with thousands of experts. If we follow their experience, then it looks like this.
Summary
Getting investment requires clearly demonstrating your project's value for those who can unlock the investment. Engage key gatekeepers early. Think about being a sales-person, what’s in it for them?
Use stories and data to create a compelling case for investment.

Ask Why: Define clear goals that resonate with stakeholders.
Recognise Your Project is Not Unique: Demonstrate examples with similar successful projects.
Measure What Matters: Present data, supporting stories that matter to your gatekeepers.
Getting investment requires clearly demonstrating your project's value for those who can unlock the investment. Engage key gatekeepers early. Think about being a sales-person, what’s in it for them?

Getting the right level of resources (i.e. people, tools & materials) is critical, and one of the toughest things to get right.

Ask Why: Define clear goals that resonate with stakeholders.
Make Friends & Keep Them Friendly: Make friends who can influence decision makers to give you the support you need.
Adjust for Optimism: Don't just give a plan, look at how much projects over-run by, adjust your estimate to reflect.

Start early. Develop trust by communicating transparently. Involve your team in shaping the project's direction and goals.

Get Your People on the Bus: Identify early champions and build team motivation.
Make Friends and Keep them Friendly: Work with your champions to engage those neutral or cold on your idea. Be transparent, invite challenge and collaboration.
Be Ready to Adapt: Be ready to adapt to ongoing stakeholder input, show value in what you do.
Summary
To really accelerate delivery, develop a modular / sectional approach. Develop it early with rapid experimentation and iterative learning. Do the tinkering and experimenting on this module/section. Test it with real customers, or trains, or people if you can. Break down complex tasks, learn fast, and continuously refine your approach.

A rare and good piece of analysis back in 2005. It's a good example of how to identify Success Factors across an organisation or group.

2012
A book for many that changed how they view the world. Introducing the 'Root Causes' for project failure, in Heuristics & Biases.
Something to consider. Kahneman and Tversky painted Heuristics as negative, others as we see to the right, also focus on what is now called "positive heuristics" as a power for good.
